![]() ![]() But we make a mistake, I think, in taking these romantic, nostalgic sketches of a town seemingly out-of-kilter with the chaos and energy of the modern world wholly at face value. ![]() I love these brief sketches for the portraits they paint of eccentric townsfolk, the goings-on of their small, out-of-the-way community, the unshowy but knowledgeable relationship between humans and the natural world (such as the tales’ herb woman, Almira Todd) at times, these tales teeter on the allegorical or the mythic, and celebrate the power of storytelling, especially female storytelling, in keeping a community and its histories alive. Poised on the very edge of the land, the quiet and dilapidated coastal village of Dunnet Landing, Maine and its surrounding geography is the real protagonist at the heart of Sarah Orne Jewett’s collection of sketches – a masterpiece of what has been called “local colour writing”, so-called for the genre’s unassuming but perceptive attention to a very particular locale. ![]() ![]() Tony and Reed have great chemistry in this issue, and their monologues juxtapose each other well here. Still, even if the characters are a little off, there is plenty of tension in the build-up. There isn’t anything offensive in this script, but it certainly isn’t Ewing’s best. A few of the characters aren’t quite their genius selves in this issue, and it feels like this is only to get the wheels rolling. Ewing’s script is very blockbuster-esque, with some simple build-up that mostly acts as a path towards the big action scene. The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the Skrull/Kree armada are now colliding, setting the stage for a massive battle for Earth. After a couple of decent but intriguing prequel issues, Empyre #1 gets everything moving at full swing.Īl Ewing gets things started by picking up where the zero issues left off. In the forties and early fifties, having moved to directing, he made several luminous films, including adaptations of such classic and important contemporary works from the stage and page as Harold Brighouse’s Hobson’s Choice, Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit and Still Life ( Brief Encounter, in the film version), and Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. ![]() Among those are pictures that he was responsible for editing, early on in his work in film: some of his national cinema’s greatest hits, including Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard’s Pygmalion, Gabriel Pascal’s Major Barbara, and Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 49th Parallel. But the long and eclectic career of this legendary British director encompasses arresting intimacy as well, as evidenced by the films of his in the Criterion Collection. For many cinephiles, the name David Lean signifies grand moviemaking-sweeping epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The self-described "counterpuncher" vice president did everything he could to bury their investigation: dismissing it as a "witch hunt," riling up his partisan base, making the press the enemy, and, with a crumbling circle of loyalists, scheming to obstruct justice in order to survive. Long on firebrand rhetoric and short on political experience, Agnew had carried out a bribery and extortion ring in office for years, when-at the height of Watergate-three young federal prosecutors discovered his crimes and launched a mission to take him down before it was too late, before Nixon's impending downfall elevated Agnew to the presidency. ![]() Agnew, the former governor of Maryland, was Richard Nixon's second-in-command. ![]() Is it possible for a sitting vice president to direct a vast criminal enterprise within the halls of the White House?
